How to come up with clues

by vonni

I’m planning a murder mystery party. The theme is a dinner party at the victim's house. Every character in the game has a color corresponding (they dress in said color) for gameplay purposes.

Anyway, I’m having trouble coming up with realistic clues and tying them all together. Any tips?

My response:

I cover this in my book, Writing Freeform Larps, but essentially my approach is to first decide how the murder is committed.

Then look at who might have seen or heard something. And what documentation might be available.

I usually structure the clues around means, motive and opportunity which can create a logic puzzle. Several characters may have motive and means and opportunity - but only the murderer has all three.
